Their friendship transcended through time as Novak served as her consulting producer for her show The Mindy Project. Kaling’s new show featured the actress as Mindy, the protagonist with a degree in medicine. Novak later made a guest appearance in 2013 with a role as Kaling’s love interest. The actor confirmed that their story was inspired by their real-life relationship, leaving stronger speculations of their dating status.

In 2017, Kaling shocked fans upon announcing that she was pregnant, not revealing the identity of the child’s father. While many speculated Novak to be the father, the actress stated that Novak was the child’s godfather. Kaling later gave birth to another child last year, with Novak serving as her child’s godfather once more.
